Low sexual assault rates at Kent State and nationally
It’s safe to say that sexual assault is a huge problem on college campuses across the country.
Every college and university is required to report crime rates each year under the Clery Act.
Over the past few years, Kent State University has reported low numbers for crimes, including sexual assault.
Compared to the national average of sexual assault rates at a four-year public college, Kent State’s numbers were higher in 2012.
However, that is because the national average for sexual assaults on campus at these types of schools was 1.45.
The low number may make sexual assault appear to not be an issue; that is, until you look closer at the data.
There are 1,309 four-year public college campuses in the United States. This includes main and regional campuses for universities.
Out of the 1,309 campuses, 850 reported zero sexual assaults on campus in 2012.
The highest number of sexual assaults reported in 2012 was 56, from University Park Campus in Pennsylvania.
According to RAINN, the Rape, Abuse, & Incest National Network, 60% of sexual assaults go unreported.
