New York Governor Urges Citizens to Wear Masks amidst COVID-19

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo held a coronavirus press briefing on May 6, 2020, where he addressed topics like: social distancing, new case numbers, and what the state is considering in terms of reopening businesses.

Gov. Cuomo emphasized that citizens of New York should know the question is: how does the state reopen? Local governments and businesses can determine when and how they would like to reopen as long as they take into account the data and science they have in their region. The data includes: the number of hospitalizations, the infection rate, the number of deaths, hospital capacity percentage, antibody test percentages, diagnostic test percentages, and tracing data percentages.

“We want to ‘Build Back Better’…like we did after Hurricane Sandy,” Gov. Cuomo said. “Long Island is better for having gone through Hurricane Sandy because we learned.”

Gov. Cuomo also took a moment to commemorate nurses and frontline healthcare workers on National Nurses Day. He called the work they are doing “extraordinary.”

Gov. Cuomo also urged citizens to wear their face masks, wash their hands and stay home whenever possible despite seeing large numbers of new COVID-19 cases in those who had been working from home.
