Social Media Encourages Voter Registration — Is It Enough?
The United States is just shy of one month from the election. As the clock is ticking, candidates and voter registration groups are making their final push to encourage people to get out to vote. This election season, registering to vote looks different than in years past. In some states, the registration process is almost entirely virtual. Though the accessibility to register is just a few clicks, that’s only the first step in the voting process. Historically, voter registration numbers do not always translate to the polls.
Dr. Mark Cassell, Political Science Professor at Kent State University, says “Voting isn’t made easy in the United States. You know, the rules are very complicated. They’re localized.” Beyond that, there is always momentum leading up an election, but students are among the lowest to actually vote. “Students always say they’ll vote. But when you actually look at turnout, students are among the very, very lowest.”
