Are you eligible? How Kent State students qualify for student loan forgiveness
Since President Biden announced a plan to cancel up to $20,000 in federal student loans, undergraduate students began to ask if they could qualify. Financial aid experts said that current college students can apply for the forgiveness, but that it all depends on their family’s financial status and when they took out loans. This includes if they are a dependent or independent student and if they received a Pell Grant.
The plan was controversial, with some claiming it is “political theatre;” another expert said that it is “addressing a symptom of a bigger problem.” Despite criticism, undergraduate students can apply for this forgiveness as long as they had certified loans before June 30, 2022. The application for the cancellation comes out in October, according to the U.S. Department of Education.
TV2’s Shane Troyano went in-depth on how exactly Kent State undergraduate students can qualify for Biden’s plan.
