Women Know their Bodies: Improving Black Maternal and Infant Mortality Rate
It was my mother’s body and her doctor would not listen…According to the CDC, “Pregnancy-related deaths per 100,000 live births (the pregnancy-related mortality ratio or PRMR) for black women older than 30 was four to five times as high as it was for white women.”There are many stories of racial disparities in the medical world that make this more crucial because most pregnancy-related deaths and infant deaths are very much preventable.
My Mother, Joyce English shares her experience and it sheds a light on how women and women of color especially are generally not believed when it comes to their bodies and the pains that they may experience when sharing that information with their doctor.
