Portage County employment offices to hold education and job fair Oct. 23
Ravenna High School will host a job and education fair on Thursday, Oct. 23 from 4 to 7:30 p.m.
The event, which is joint effort by OhioMeansJobs Portage County and Portage County Job and Family Services, is expected to draw 250 to 300 job seekers said Brian Boykin, workforce administrator at OhioMeansJobs Portage County.
“Our goal is to help our county residents become employed,” Boykin said. “[For] those who are underemployed, we want to help them develop some skill sets and hopefully be employed in some occupation that can sustain a livable wage.”
At least 15 businesses, seven educational institutions and six temp agencies will be at the fair said Marie Lishick, job developer at OhioMeansJobs Portage County.
“I’m waiting on five to six more confirmations from businesses,” Lishick said. “We’re excited and we think there will be a full house.”
3 Tips for Success at a Job Fair
Marie Lishick gives some suggestions for job seekers.
- Dress appropriately- It is important to look professional when meeting with future employers.
- Bring a resume- Some employers may have applications available, so bring any information you might need so you can apply there.
- Be ready to market yourself- Be able to tell and show employers what you can bring to their companies.
Each participant will receive a resume portfolio, resume paper and a USB thumb drive, Portage County Job and Family Services Public Information Officer Kim Bushek said.
“We wanted to make sure they had everything to have their ticket for success going into a job,” Buchek said. “The USBs were to save their resumes. That way they have their resumes on them at all times.”
Employers at the job fair will include Viking Forge, East End Welding, McMaster-Carr Supply Company, Portage Precision Polymers and Mantaline Corporation, Boykin said.
Some of these jobs require skills such as welding that not everyone may have, which is why they are also having educational institutions at the job fair, Boykin said. Some people may even qualify for help funding their job training.
For a free bus trip to and from the fair, participants can present a flyer for the event to any PARTA driver, Bushek said. Printable flyers can be found on the Portage County Job and Family Services Facebook page.
