The Kent State School of Fashion is one of the biggest degree programs at Kent State University ranking five nationally and 15 internationally.

The ranking of the school keeps improving moving from 25 internationally to 15 this past year.

There are many factors that go into the ranking being so high from faculty and staff to studying abroad.

Brittani Peterson is the marketing associate for the school of fashion and has her idea as to why the program is so successful.

“First and foremost, our faculty and staff make our program so successful with the wealth of talent and knowledge they bring,” Peterson said.

She also gave a lot of credit to the study abroad program helping the major gain credibility and national and international prestige.

“Our study-away program is incredible.” Peterson said. “All fashion students are required to complete at least one study-away experience before graduation, which is rare for most schools. Students have the opportunity to visit our NYC Studio location, the KSU Florence campus in Italy, or to attend Paris, Germany, London, China or South Korea.”

Fashion students get a lot out of the program as well and have their own unique vision as to what they want the program to do for them.

Emily Hall is a fashion major and has gained a good experience from the program.

“I have definitely gotten a lot of good hands-on learning. That’s how I learn best,” Hall said. “I think a lot of it is because of the professors. I feel like at Kent State everyone is really passionate about where our future is going.”

Nora Riffle is a fashion student that wants to own her own business in the future.

“I really hope to own my own line and hopefully travel a lot and design clothes,” Riffle said. “I have definitely been inspired by a lot of my professors and what jobs they have had and what they have been able to accomplish.”

Victoria Sallot is a fashion student who thinks the program is getting higher in the rankings because “the instructors really care and push.”

“We go very very fast,” Sallot said. “A lot of my classes mimic the industry where we have exponential projects, so you have twice as much work the next week. I personally like the artistic side, I want to go into costume design I want to learn the foundations of technical creation and draw and convey my designs and work in operas and the film industry.”

Peterson sees the future of the fashion school to be very bright.

” Our school is included the first phase of the University expansion and renovation that’s going on, so in a few years we’ll be getting a bigger, state of the art space with even more equipment which we’re all very excited for,” Peterson said.
