Update: Ohio COVID-19

Ohio Governor, Mike DeWine issued the new Stay Safe Ohio Order, Friday.

The mandate was announced in partnership with the Ohio Department of Health, during a daily press conference.

The Stay Safe Ohio Order replaces the newly- expired Stay at Home order. It will incorporate the openings of businesses a part of the Responsible RestartOhio plan. The restart plan aims to gradually open the State’s businesses and infrastructures.

Throughout May, businesses are expected to open.

Medical procedures and surgeries that do not require an overnight stay will resume May 1, 2020. Manufacturing, distribution, and construction companies will reopen May 4, 2020. Retail stores are expected to open May 12, 2020. At the moment, restaurants, barbershops, gyms, and salons do not have a reopening date.

This transition period is supported by Lt. Governor, Jon Husted who says he believes in providing quality standards for Ohioans amid the pandemic.

“What was the Stay Home Ohio, is now the Stay Safe Ohio Order. This represents a transition to the next phase of how we’re going to live our lives,” said Husted. “We know people are going out more (the safest place is still at home) but when you do go out, we want to make sure you have the best standards to stay safe.”

In addition, DeWine shared principles to resume business practices. Below is his Tweet outlining business standards for the RestartOhio plan.

During the press conference, Husted candidly revealed,

“I don’t enjoy wearing a mask. I know most of you don’t enjoy it, but I’m going to wear a mask. Husted continued, Not because of the order, but because there are a lot of people in my life who are vulnerable.”

Following, DeWine addressed residents who believe officials are reopening Ohio to fast or too slow, saying,

“What is important is we are all together. Whether we like it or not, our collective actions matter a great deal. Dewine continued saying, “We are one state.”

The new order expires May 29, 2020. DeWine reminds Ohioans the order can expire early or be extended again.

“May 29th is the expiration date for the new order, but don’t read too much into that date,” DeWine shared. “We will be issuing new orders throughout the month. No one should be too fixated on the date.”
