Cleaning up the enviornment

With global warming being a conspiracy to some numbers of the world’s population, there are some people who still fight to make the environment a better place. The Environmental Protection Act was created to bring a system of integrated pollution control for the disposal of wastes to land, water and air.

When it comes to water, the Great Lakes hit home to Ohioans. However, there are cleanup organizations that work to keep the lakes clean and reduce pollution.

The city of Cleveland ranks high for plastic pollution in the Great Lakes compared to other cities. According to a Rochester Institute of Technology study, both the United States and Canada discarded nearly 22 million pounds of plastic into the Great Lakes.

Drink Local. Drink Tap, Inc. is a local nonprofit organization inspiring others to recognize and solve local water issues in the Cleveland area to help provide safe water access to people in need.

According to its site, 6,861 pounds of trash were picked up from the Lake Erie’s coast at Edgewater Park in Cleveland.

Aleks Crisler

Aleks Crisler, a park ranger at Lake County Metropark, also works to keep the environment safe and clean alongside his co-rangers.

“Five different times a year we bring in different groups to help clean up pollution in the park,” Crisler said.

In early May, the Lake Metropark rangers had a support group walk through specific areas of the park to clean up litter throughout the area they were assigned to. This clean-up program started over 10 years ago.

Crisler said he believes the main issue is educating the public on the importance of keeping the environment healthy and clean for the sake of the planet.

“People just don’t know enough about it to care about it,” he said.

The Lake County Metropark is currently creating an educational program for children and young adults in order to educate them more about the importance of keeping the parks clean and how to make the planet safer and healthier.
