Ohio Voters vote to legalize recreational marijuana

With more than 95% of the votes in, voters in Ohio approved of the legalization of recreational marijuana. The statute will take effect in 30 days.

On Tuesday, voters across Ohio voted on Issue 2 to make Ohio the 24th state to legalize recreational marijuana use.

This bill will allow adults over the age of 21 to buy and possess 2.5 ounces of marijuana and will be able to grow in their own home. The most a person can grow is no more than six plants at a time. There will also be a 10% tax on purchases which will be spent on administration costs, addiction treatment and more according to apnews.com.

Issue 2 passed with 57% of voters voting “Yes” on the ballot.

Maddy Masie, one of the voters that voted “Yes” said she was excited for this to pass.

“I think it was finally time for marijuana to be legal. Look at Michigan, they are rolling in tax dollars from marijuana sales,” Masie said. “Plus, I think it shouldn’t be treated criminally like it was. This can help a lot of people. Medicinal marijuana I know is currently legal but now that recreational marijuana is, this will help Ohio gain tax money to help towards making schools better, making our cities better and building up some of these cities that don’t have a lot of resources. I’m excited for this to pass.”

Masie said this will help create opportunities for people as well.
